A peek inside
Juno pressed her freckled nose to the aeroplane window as Cape Town unfolded below like a living painting, mountains shouldering the glittering sea. The long flight from the United Kingdom had left her curly hair wild and her stomach tight with equal parts thrill and worry. At the arrivals gate stood Granny Thandi in a dress of sunshine yellow and turquoise that seemed to hold the whole afternoon light. Juno raced into those open arms and breathed citrus, sea salt, and something softer she had almost forgotten. “Welcome to my city, my bright-eyed girl,” Granny murmured against her hair. In that moment the unfamiliar city felt a little less enormous and a little more like a promise.
Granny’s house sat behind a white wall heavy with bougainvillea, and the heated pool flashed turquoise invitations the instant Juno dropped her suitcase. She changed into her swimming costume faster than she had ever packed for school and slipped into water that hugged her like a warm secret. Granny Thandi watched from a shaded chair, colourful beads clicking softly as she stirred sweet iced tea. “This pool has waited all year for your laughter,” she said, and Juno believed her. Floating on her back, Juno studied the strange blue of the sky and wondered whether she could ever belong in a place so bright. Already the cold grey mornings of home felt distant, though a shy part of her still missed them.
