A peek inside
Remy dashed down the crowded sidewalk with newspapers under his arm. His flat cap sat crooked on his curly hair, and his patched coat flapped in the cool breeze. "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" he called in a bright voice. The streets of New York in 1920 bustled with horse carts, automobiles, and people hurrying to work. Tall buildings rose like gray mountains around him. Remy loved the energy of the city. He lived in a tenement with neighbors from many faraway lands. They felt like one big family. Every day he sold papers to help pay the rent. Today felt special somehow. He waved to a friend and skipped over a puddle. The smell of fresh bread drifted from the corner bakery. Remy smiled wide. This was his block, and he would protect it.
Remy pushed open the bakery door and warm air wrapped him like a hug. Lila stood behind the counter dusted with flour. She was a kind Italian immigrant mother who baked the best rolls on the block. "Buongiorno, Remy!" she said with a smile that lit her tired eyes. She handed him a warm bun soft from the oven. Remy took a grateful bite. "Thank you, Mrs. Lila. Your bread tastes like sunshine." Lila laughed softly but her face grew serious. She glanced at a crumpled letter. "The landlord wants to tear down our buildings for a new hotel. We have only days left." Remy's heart thumped hard. He looked out at the familiar street where children played hopscotch. This place was home. "We cannot lose it," he whispered. Lila nodded and wiped her apron.
