A peek inside
In the heart of bustling fifteenth-century Kyoto, cherry blossoms danced like pink snow in the spring breeze. Nine-year-old Yumi stood outside her father's silk shop, her flowing kimono rustling softly. Bright lanterns hung above the crowded streets. Merchants called out about fine fabrics and sweet treats. Yumi loved the cherry blossom festival more than any other day. She helped fold colorful silks and greet cheerful customers. Her father smiled as he arranged bolts of cloth. The air smelled of tea and fresh blossoms. Children laughed while chasing petals. Yumi watched the happy crowds with bright eyes. Soon the emperor's grand parade would fill the streets with music and wonder. She could hardly wait to see the imperial poets and dancers. Everything felt magical under the soft pink canopy of flowers.
Suddenly a worried messenger hurried into the shop. He bowed low and spoke quickly to Yumi's father. Master Kiyo, the gentle imperial poet with ink-stained sleeves and wise eyes, had gone missing. The emperor needed his special poem for the parade that very afternoon. Without the poet the celebration might lose its heart. Yumi listened carefully from behind a stack of silk. Her quick mind raced with questions. Where could the kind poet have gone on such a busy festival day? Just then she spotted a fine folding fan lying near the doorway. It looked elegant yet out of place. Delicate silk threads trailed from its edge like tiny colorful paths. Yumi picked it up gently. The threads felt smooth between her fingers. She wondered if this fan belonged to Master Kiyo. Perhaps it held a clue to his whereabouts.
