A peek inside
Sunny pulled on his red wellies and green overalls, then grinned at the class allotment. The soil smelled fresh after the morning rain. Miss Patel held up a small paper packet. Inside were grey and black sunflower seeds, each one no bigger than a fingernail. Sunny turned a seed over in his palm. It felt hard and smooth. Today the class would begin a real science adventure. They would plant the seeds, watch them change week by week, and learn exactly what plants need to grow. Sunny already felt excited. He wanted to see a tiny seed become a tall plant with a bright yellow face. The allotment plot waited, neat and ready under the soft spring sky.
Miss Patel showed the class how to plant. First they loosened the warm earth with small trowels. Sunny made a shallow hole with his finger. He dropped one seed in and covered it gently with soil. Plants need soil because it holds water and gives them tiny bits of food called nutrients. Next the children watered the soil until it felt damp, not soggy. Water helps the seed swell and wake up. Sunny patted the ground and stuck a wooden label beside his spot. The class talked about sunlight too. Without light later on, green leaves cannot make food. For now the seed rested underground, safe and quiet, waiting for the right conditions to begin its life cycle.
