A peek inside
Rhys hiked up the windy Welsh hillside with his binoculars and backpack. The grassland stretched out like a green carpet under the bright sky. Tall grasses swayed and whispered in the breeze. "Today I will discover how animals live safely here," he said aloud. Grasslands are open places with few tall trees. Animals must find clever ways to hide, eat, and stay safe. Rhys knelt by a rabbit hole near the path. He wanted to learn about rabbits, birds, and worms. Each animal has special body parts and behaviours that help it thrive. The wind tugged at his jacket as he began his adventure. His notebook was ready for notes about adaptations. Adaptations are features that help living things survive in their habitat.
Rhys peered into the dark entrance of a rabbit burrow. Soft soil had been kicked out around the hole. "Rabbits dig these tunnels to stay safe," he whispered. In open grasslands, there are few places to hide from foxes and birds of prey. Burrows give rabbits a cool, hidden home underground. The tunnels branch into rooms for sleeping and raising babies. Rabbits can dash inside when danger appears. Their strong front paws scoop soil quickly. Back legs kick dirt away. Rhys touched the loose earth gently. He knew never to put his hand deep inside. This underground network is one important adaptation. It helps rabbits live safely where the land is mostly grass and sky.
