A peek inside

Jasper pulled on his green wellies and hurried outside. Today was Neighbourhood Clean-Up Day! His street looked busy with neighbours carrying bags and gloves. Jasper felt curious and a little excited. He wanted to help look after the place where he lived. 'What will we do first?' he asked his mum as they joined the group by the park gate.

Ms Patel, the organiser, smiled at everyone. 'Litter can harm animals and plants in our neighbourhood,' she said. 'When plastic and rubbish stay on the ground, they spoil habitats where living things need clean space to grow and thrive.' Jasper looked at a crisp packet near a flower bed. He frowned. He did not want animals to get hurt.

One important way to look after the environment is to reduce, reuse, and recycle our waste. Ms Patel held up three bright posters. 'These three ideas help us make less rubbish,' she explained. Jasper nodded. He wanted to learn each idea carefully. Looking after the environment meant keeping Earth healthier for people, plants, and animals that share our world.

First came reduce. 'Reduce means using less so we create less waste,' said Ms Patel. Jasper thought about the plastic bottles he sometimes bought. 'If I use a refillable water bottle, I make less rubbish,' he said. Ms Patel clapped. Using fewer single-use items keeps more rubbish out of bins, streets, and wild places where it does not belong.

Next was reuse. 'Reuse means finding a new job for something instead of throwing it away,' Ms Patel told them. Jasper held an empty jam jar. 'I could keep pencils in this!' he grinned. His friend Maya said her family reused old boxes for storage. Reusing things means less new waste is made, which helps look after our shared environment.

Then came recycle. 'Recycle means turning old materials into new things,' explained Ms Patel. She showed paper, plastic bottles, and clean tins. 'These can go in the recycling bin so factories can make them into something useful again.' Jasper traced the recycling symbol with his finger. Recycling saves energy and materials, and it is one clear way to care for the environment.

Jasper and Maya began sorting rubbish they found near the swings. Paper went in one bag. Plastic bottles went in another. Food scraps went into a compost bucket for garden soil. 'Sorting carefully helps recycling work properly,' Maya said. Jasper wiped his gloves and smiled. Every piece they sorted was a small step toward looking after habitats and living things nearby.
