A peek inside
Sami stood at the gate of the school sensory garden with a bright smile. Binoculars hung around his neck and a small backpack rested on his shoulders. Today his class would go on a sensory garden safari. Their teacher explained that a garden is a habitat, a living place where plants and tiny creatures share space and food. To explore it well, they would use five senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. Sami felt curious and ready. He wanted to spot minibeasts under leaves, sniff herbs in sunny beds, listen for birds, feel rough bark and taste safe garden leaves the teacher had already checked. The morning air felt fresh. Everyone promised to move gently so the living things would stay calm and safe.
First came the sense of sight. Sami lifted his binoculars and looked closely along the path. He spotted a shiny black beetle crawling over damp soil near a stone. Beside a marigold he saw a ladybird with red wing cases dotted with black spots. Under a broad leaf, a small snail left a thin silvery trail. Sight helps us notice colour, shape, size and movement. Minibeasts are small animals without backbones, such as insects, spiders and snails. Sami whispered what he saw so he would not frighten them. He also noticed green aphids clustered on a soft stem. Looking carefully taught him that many creatures hide in plain view. His class wrote simple notes: beetle, ladybird, snail and aphids, all found by patient watching.
