A peek inside
After a gentle morning rain, the village stream sparkled beside the quiet houses. River the Otter poked his bright eyes above the water and twitched his blue scarf. He loved exploring after rainfall. Today he wanted to follow one special raindrop on a long adventure. River climbed onto a smooth stone and looked around carefully. Tiny beads of water clung to every leaf and blade of grass. One shiny raindrop sat on a wide green leaf near the bank. River whispered, Hello little drop. Where will you travel next? The raindrop seemed to shimmer as if it heard him. River decided to track its whole journey so he could learn how water moves through our world. He felt curious and ready. The stream gurgled softly, inviting him to begin the search.
River padded closer to the leaf and watched the raindrop tremble. A soft breeze tipped the leaf, and the drop slid off onto the damp soil below. This was the start of collection, when water gathers together again after it falls. The drop soaked into the soft earth between roots and tiny stones. River pressed his nose near the ground and sniffed the wet smell. He could not see the drop any more, yet he knew it was travelling downward. Water that lands on land often seeps through soil on its way to streams and rivers. River followed the wet trail with careful paws. He felt excited because the journey had truly begun. Collection helps fill the places where water can rest and flow. Soon the drop would reach moving water.
