A peek inside
River crouched at the edge of the shimmering pond, his binoculars swinging from a strap around his neck. He opened his notebook and smiled. Today he wanted to unlock pond life secrets. What did the animals living here need to survive? Soft wind rustled the reeds. Dragonflies darted above the water. A duck paddled near the bank. Somewhere under the surface, fish glided past green weeds. River whispered, "Every living thing needs something special to stay alive." He wrote four big words at the top of his page: water, food, air, and shelter. If he could find how frogs, fish, ducks, and dragonflies met those needs, he would understand this wetland habitat much better. His pencil was ready. The pond was waiting.
River sat on a flat stone and thought carefully. Living things are plants and animals that grow, move, or change over time. To stay alive, they all share four basic needs. Water keeps their bodies working and helps them stay cool or wet when they must. Food gives them energy to swim, fly, hop, or grow. Air lets them breathe, even if they take it from water or from the sky. Shelter is a safe place to rest, hide from danger, or raise their young. In a wetland habitat, the pond holds water, plants grow for food and cover, and the air moves freely above the surface. River underlined each need in his notebook. "I will watch one creature at a time," he said. "I will record how each one finds water, food, air, and shelter right here."
