A peek inside

Deep under the soft brown soil, a tiny seed rested quietly. The seed was small and round, like a little brown dot waiting for a big adventure. Outside, the world felt far away. Rain began to fall gently on the ground above. Cool water trickled down through the earth and touched the seed. The seed felt something new. It was time to wake up. "Hello," whispered a cheerful voice from inside. That voice belonged to Sprout. Sprout was a cheerful green sprout with big curious eyes and tiny leaves, still tucked safely inside the seed coat. Sprout wondered what would happen next. Every plant begins as a seed. The seed holds a tiny plant and food to help it start growing. Sprout was ready for the secret journey from tiny seed to sunny flower.

The water soaked into the seed and made it swell. Sprout stretched inside the seed coat. "I feel bigger!" said Sprout with a happy giggle. The seed coat began to soften and crack open a little. This stage is called germination. Germination is when a seed starts to grow into a young plant. Sprout needed water to begin this important change. Without water, the seed would stay asleep. With water, life could start. Sprout pushed carefully against the soft seed coat. A tiny tip peeped out. The soil around felt cool and damp. Earthworms wriggled nearby but did not bother Sprout. "I am growing!" cheered Sprout. The first part of the plant life cycle is the seed. Then water helps the seed wake up and germinate. Sprout was excited to discover what would come next on this underground adventure.
