A peek inside
Lukas adjusted his round glasses and peered at the cracked metal grate half hidden under ivy in the quiet Berlin park. His messy brown hair stuck up in every direction as he knelt beside Freya. She tugged her bright red scarf tighter and grinned. Something about the cool air rising from below made both of them curious. Freya tested the grate with one bold boot. It shifted with a soft scrape. Together they eased it open and stared into a narrow limestone stair that curved into darkness. Faint carvings lined the walls like forgotten handwriting. Lukas felt his heart thump with excitement rather than fear. Freya already started down the first step. The city noise faded above them. A new world waited under the streets they thought they knew so well.
The limestone passage smelled of old stone and damp earth. Soft light filtered through tiny cracks above, painting pale stripes across the floor. Lukas ran his fingers along a wall etched with faded arrows and tiny numbers. Freya held her scarf like a banner and marched ahead. Suddenly the corridor ahead slid sideways with a low rumble. A new doorway appeared where solid rock had stood a moment before. Both children froze. From the shifting stone a small figure peeled itself free. It looked like a walking pile of smooth pebbles with kind glowing eyes. I am Otto, it said in a voice like gravel rolling gently. The walls move when secrets need guarding. Lukas and Freya exchanged a wide eyed look. Adventure had found them first.
