A peek inside
Pip loved Thornwood Forest. Every morning, Pip walked the mossy paths and checked the traps. "The traps keep us safe," said Pip proudly.
Wren the tiny sparrow perched on a trap nearby. "Safe from what, exactly?" Wren chirped. Pip had never wondered that before.
Then Pip heard it. A low, soft sound. Not a growl. More like a whimper. Something was caught in the big trap ahead.
It was a fox. Large and dark, with amber eyes. Her name was Sable. She was trembling. Pip had never seen a fox look so afraid.
Pip stepped closer. Sable did not snap or snarl. She looked at Pip. Just looked. Her eyes were soft and full of something familiar. Sadness.
"She has cubs," Wren whispered from above. "Three little ones. Waiting for her. She only came here looking for food."
Pip sat down quietly in the leaves. A hungry mama. Babies waiting at home. That did not sound harmful. That sounded like love.
