A peek inside
Livia hurried between marble columns as festival drums thundered through the Roman forum. Ink stained her fingertips from morning lessons, and her simple tunic fluttered behind her. Chariot racers practiced nearby while vendors shouted about honey cakes and bright ribbons. Today the emperor would crown the winner with the sacred laurel wreath. Livia grinned, eager to watch every thrilling moment.
Suddenly a cry rang out near the victory stand. The polished wooden box that held the sacred laurel sat open and empty. Guards spun in circles, searching the crowded square. Livia’s heart thumped hard against her ribs. Someone had stolen the wreath before the great race even began. She clenched her fists and decided she would help find it.
