Amara bounced in her seat on the yellow school bus as her bouncy curls bobbed with every bump in the road. Bright eyes stared out the window at the sunny city streets. She loved animals more than anything else. Today her class headed to the bustling city zoo for a special trip. Her backpack held a notebook for sketches and a bag of apple slices. Mrs. Patel the teacher smiled from the front seat. “We will meet pandas and elephants today,” she said. Amara hugged her notebook tight while friends chattered about lions and tigers all around her. The bus turned a sharp corner. Tall green gates appeared ahead in the sunlight. Amara pressed her nose to the cool glass. What amazing creatures waited inside?
The tall gates swung wide and the class poured onto the sunny paths. Amara skipped ahead a few steps under the bright blue sky. Colorful signs pointed toward every animal home. Birds called from leafy trees nearby. She sniffed warm air that smelled like grass and hay. “This place feels enormous!” Amara said to her friend Leo. Leo tipped his red cap and grinned. Mrs. Patel waved everyone over to a giant map board. “First we visit the panda yard,” she announced. Amara longed to dash in every direction at once. Her sneakers tapped the ground with impatience. Still she stayed close to the group. They strolled past chattering monkeys. Soon a quiet black-and-white shape appeared behind a wooden fence.
