A peek inside
Shelly glided across the soft sand floor inside the colorful coral circus tent. Her shiny red shell caught the glow of the anemone lights. She loved evening practice time best of all. Thick kelp ropes hung low for beginners, and she raced along them with happy speed. The tent smelled of salty popcorn and sweet seaweed candy. Clams clapped softly from the front seats while she spun in neat little circles. “Faster feels wonderful,” Shelly said with a bright grin. She practiced tiny flips that made bubbles rise all around her. Far above, the high wire waited like a silver thread, but tonight she stayed close to the ground. The reef circus felt warm and full of possibility. Shelly finished one more loop and rested, already thinking about tomorrow.
Coralina floated into the center ring with a swirl of glitter. She was a sparkly sea star who wore a tiny top hat and held a glowing baton. “Welcome, friends of the reef!” she called in a clear voice. “Our next show needs a daring high-wire star!” Shelly’s heart thumped with excitement. She raised one feeler high. “I want to try!” she shouted. Coralina smiled and pointed upward. “The high wire is thin and high. Only careful practice will keep you safe.” Shelly nodded hard. She had raced every low rope in the tent, yet the high wire looked different. Other creatures cheered. Shelly slid toward the tall ladder of woven coral. Tonight she would begin her real climb. The lights dimmed just a little as she started up.
