A peek inside
Lark skipped along the sandy path that led down to the shore. The wind tugged at her wind-tousled hair as she pulled her bright yellow raincoat tighter. Beside her walked Grandpa Gruff, his silver hair shining in the morning light. He wore a thick knitted sweater and sturdy boots that crunched on the pebbles. Lark loved these beach days with him more than anything. They always searched for pretty shells and smooth stones. Seagulls cried overhead, and the salty air filled her nose. Waves rolled in and out with a steady whoosh. “What will we find today, Grandpa?” she asked, hopping over a small rock. Gruff smiled and pointed toward the wide stretch of rocky beach ahead. The water sparkled under the cloudy sky. Lark felt ready for whatever the morning brought.
As they reached the rocky beach, Lark spotted something glinting near a tide pool. She knelt down and picked up an old glass bottle half buried in wet sand. Inside it lay a rolled paper. “Look, Grandpa! A bottle with a note!” she called. Gruff knelt beside her, his boots sinking a little. Carefully, Lark pulled out the faded paper and unrolled it. It was a treasure map with wobbly lines and X marks drawn in brown ink. “Well now,” Gruff said, squinting at the marks. “Someone left this for us to find.” The map showed the rocky shore, a big boulder, and a path toward some cliffs. Wind whipped the paper edges. Lark’s eyes grew wide. “Can we follow it?” she asked. Gruff nodded. “Let’s see where it leads before the tide turns.” They stood ready.
