Nikki bounced into the sunny back garden on her birthday morning. Colorful bunting hung between the fence posts and fluttered in the light breeze. She wore curly pigtails and a bright party hat that sat crooked on her head. “Today will be the best party ever!” she said out loud. Her brown dog Rolo trotted beside her with his tail wagging fast. The grass felt soft under her sneakers. She carried a box of streamers and balloons. First she wanted to set up the games table near the flower beds. Then she would arrange the colorful cupcakes on a pretty stand. Rolo barked once as if he agreed. Nikki smiled and started unpacking everything carefully. What fun games would they play first?
Nikki opened the box and pulled out rolls of shiny streamers. She twisted blue and yellow ones around the garden chairs. Rolo watched with bright eyes and tried to catch a loose end in his mouth. “No chewing the decorations, Rolo,” Nikki laughed. She placed a white tablecloth on the wooden table. Then she set out a tall stand for the cupcakes. Each cupcake had bright frosting in pink, green, and orange. Sprinkles sparkled on top like tiny stars. Nikki counted them twice to make sure there were enough for everyone. She felt excited as she stepped back to look. The garden already looked ready for a celebration. Suddenly the wind tugged at one streamer. Would it stay in place?
