A peek inside
Mia skipped into the busy town square, her pigtails bouncing with every step. She wore a bright red backpack that held her sketchbook and a snack. The square hummed with chatter and footsteps. Colorful shops lined the edges, and a big stone fountain sprayed cool water in the middle. Mia loved this place more than anywhere else. She sat on a wooden bench and pulled out her apple. Birds pecked at crumbs nearby. A gentle breeze carried the smell of fresh bread from the bakery. Mia smiled as she watched families stroll past. Today felt full of possibilities. She wondered what interesting things she might see. Her eyes scanned the crowd for something special. The morning sun warmed her face as she settled in.
Near the fountain, a shiny red fire engine gleamed in the sunlight. Rufus the firefighter stood beside it, smiling as he polished the bright metal with a soft cloth. His helmet sat on the ground nearby. Mia watched him work carefully. Across the way, Lila the nurse knelt beside a small boy. She gently bandaged his scraped knee with clean white gauze. The boy stopped crying and grinned. Further on, a vet in a blue coat checked a fluffy dog’s paw. The postman waved from his bright yellow van as he sorted letters. Mia’s heart beat faster with excitement. So many people helped others every day. She leaned forward on the bench. “I wish I could help too,” she whispered to herself.
