Mira pressed her worn star chart to her chest and stepped off the riverbank. The Nile swallowed her feet - but instead of cold mud, she felt a warm current, gentle as a held breath. Below the dark water, a soft blue-green light glimmered. Mira looked down and saw a doorway made of river reeds, wide open, waiting just for her.
She slipped through the doorway and landed on a floor of polished stone. Tall shelves rose on every side, coiled with papyrus scrolls. The water above her curved like a ceiling of living glass, and tiny silver fish drifted past like scattered stars. Mira held her breath. The place felt ancient and hushed, the way a secret feels just before it is spoken aloud.
